Abstract:
Pod koniec 19 wieku austriacki geolog Edward Suess (1831-1914) (F. 1) wprowadził do nauk o Ziemi pojęcie „Oceanu Tetydy”, nazwał tak wielki stary ocean istniejący kiedyś między Eurazją a Afryką.Naukowiec poparł zwolenników teorii kontrakcji , według której wszystkie współczesne kontynenty znajdowały się zawsze w tym samym miejscu, a oceany powstały w wyniku obniżania się dużych partii skorupy ziemskiej. Z tej teorii wynikało, że ocean Tetyda powstał po obniżaniu kontynenta Gondwany, ale poglądy naukowca przeszły do historii, jednak termin Tetyda pozostał wprowadzony do nauki na zawsze.
